  • illegal

  • effective

  • hard

  • dead

  • legal?

The answers:

No, it is not illegal (though there are limits around how, when & who you can call). Yes, many sales statistics clearly show that—even in 2024—cold calling remains an effective way to reach & successfully sell to your target audiences. So, it’s not dead & it is legal. … But is it “hard?”

Cold calling is what you make it. Use these 3 steps to make it simple.

  1. Start with one. When the weight of the long list of contacts or the pressure of the quarterly sales quotas make your phone feel like 1,000 pounds, just make one call. Tell yourself, “I can start with one—& then I can stop.” You can always keep going if it feels okay. You can always try “just one more” (as many times as you like). And you can always come back later … even if it’s only to start with one again.

  2. Break the ice. Just like breaking the list down makes it lighter, so does breaking the big goal of the call down make the process much easier. If your goal is to close the deal with every single call, chances are high that you’ll feel highly disappointed. (After all, statistically, you’ll be accumulating a 3:1 no-to-yes ratio or higher; some stats advise it’s closer to 12:1.) You can make your call goals much simpler. For instance: Cross off the uninterested names & numbers; ID the appropriate decision-maker; set up a meeting; introduce yourself.

  3. Qualify your list. Step #2 helps you to do this. Once you’ve qualified your list, you can move those names further along in your sales funnel. People you speak to can go from “Cold Contacts” to “Warm Leads” to “Hot Leads” fast. All it takes is opening the conversation.
